You were born with a body shape that is based on your bone structure and doesn’t change over time. Yes, as you gain or lose weight, you may notice some different places that need more or less emphasis. But, if you have wide shoulders or broader hips, you will always have wide shoulders or broader hips (unless you’re up for some serious surgery, which I do not recommend!).

The key to looking your best is choosing styles that look best on YOUR body shape – not on the model or your best friend. So there are a few things to keep in mind; these will make shopping MUCH easier! You’ll still have to try things on, but it’s easier to get in the ballpark when you understand some basic ideas:

  1. Do you recall my key principle of Harmony? That means to work WITH your shape, not against it. A curvy figure looks more appealing with curvy design lines rather than straight lines (soft fabrics, curvy patterns, shaped structure). A straight figure looks better in straight lines rather than curvy lines (weightier fabrics, straight or geometric patterns, straight structure).
  2. All style lines should lead towards a feature that will balance your shape, such as your waist or shoulders.

Remember:  if a clothing item doesn’t look good on you, it’s the clothing’s fault, not your body’s. No matter what you’ve been told, one size or one shape does NOT fit all.

So the next time you see an outfit you love, before you try it on, think about:

  • Is this a good color for me?
  • Does this suit my body shape – highlight my best features and de-emphasize my “not favorite” ones?
  • Would wearing it make me feel fabulous?

If you can’t answer yes three times, chuck it. There are lots of other fabulous choices that will be brilliant on you!
